What Does a Lineman Do?

A lineman is a type of skilled laborer who is responsible for installing and maintaining overhead and underground electrical power lines. Their tasks include stringing, splicing, and tensioning wires, installing poles, transformers and other associated equipment, and regularly inspecting and maintaining the electrical system.

Birmingham Power Solutions is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Lineman to join our team. Our Lineman responsibilities include providing routine maintenance, repairs and new connections to our customers’ power lines. As a key part of our team, our Lineman must have an expertise and a strong commitment to safety while also delivering exceptional customer service.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complete daily maintenance and testing of power line systems
  • Pull wires or cables through conduit or between access points
  • Build and install line fixtures, poles and guard rails
  • Perform service upgrades for existing customers
  • Assist in the installation of the new lines
  • Inspect cable reel trucks to ensure proper working order
  • Rectify faults in the power line system
  • Restring wire line systems
  • Install neutral and grounding systems
  • Maintain proficiency in safety procedures

Work Hours and Benefits:

Qualifications:

  • Valid state driver’s license
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to climb poles quickly, safely and regularly
  • Lift and maneuver heavy objects or equipment
  • Work on the roof of buildings or tall structures
  • Troubleshoot and ensure proper operation of power systems

Training and Education:

Successful candidates will have a High School Diploma or GED and have previously completed a Lineman training program. We also expect all Lineman to have prior experience as a Lineman, preferably in the power and energy industry.

What a typical day looks like for a lineman

A lineman is responsible for installing, testing, and maintaining electrical power systems, including high-and low-voltage power lines and telecommunications systems. On a day-to-day basis, a lineman is often dispatched to repair or replace damaged power or telephone lines, or to install new or modified systems components. He or she is also responsible for inspecting existing systems, testing equipment and components, installing new systems or repairing existing ones, and then providing maintenance service when needed. Besides working on power lines, a lineman also engages in rigging, cable stringing, and aerial device operations, as well as pole climbing and bucket truck activities.
